On 10th September 2019 Dulux announced their Colour of the Year 2020 as Tranquil Dawn.
Experts selected the soft green hue to embody the nation’s mood on the approach to the new decade. It reflects a growing desire to understand what it is to be human at a time when advances in technology are making us feel increasingly disconnected from each other. Tranquil Dawn has been variously described as a grey green, a hazy pale green and also hailed as the ‘new neutral’. It is certainly a delicate fluid shade that sits somewhere between green, grey and blue. As with all colour - it is not just the colour itself but those colours that are used with it which can greatly alter its impact and feel in a space.
Each year, supporting the Colour of the Year announcement, the panel of experts brings us an overriding theme. The universal theme for 2020 is identified as a desire to create more opportunities to experience ‘A Human Touch’ in our lives and our homes. The four supporting palettes capture the essence of being human and show how Tranquil Dawn can be used to create spaces that enhance what we need and want: to seek Meaning, to Care, to Play, and to encourage Creativity.
The colours within all 4 palettes including Tranquil Dawn have been inspired by the seasons changing sunrises. These are summarised below.
The Meaning Palette - A Home for Meaning. Clean & simple tones. Inspired by a cold winter’s dawn this minimalist palette features icy green, warm cream and charcoal hues, creating a feeling of calm and contemplation.
The Care Palette - A Home for Care. Soft flowing pastels. Inspired by a hazy spring horizon, this palette evokes a feeling of deep relaxation and peace thanks to a blend of earthy neutrals, muted greens, dusky pinks and pale blues.
The Play Palette - A Home for Play. Vibrant brights. Inspired by the horizon of a hot summer morning, this palette features vivid reds, alongside baby blue, cream and pale green.
The Creativity Palette - A Home for Creativity. Sumptuous shades. Inspired by a warm autumnal day, a sumptuous palette with maroon and tobacco hues, pale and moss greens provides a space for self-expression and storytelling.
