Each year AkzoNobel gathers international design experts to identify & analyse the design trends that best capture the times. Their conclusion is that there has been a shift in attitudes from 2018 – when people felt overwhelmed by the deluge of news and demands on their time, saw divisions across society, and looked for sanctuary in the spaces where they live, work and play. The experts noted that people were now becoming more aware of the world around them. They comment that if the unpredictability of 2018 saw people retreat, then we are now seeing their awakening. People want to feel quiet optimism – they are looking for their world to feel energising and warm, natural and true. This leads to the classic, comforting tones of Spiced Honey – the Dulux Colour of the Year for 2019. Spiced Honey is a warm amber tone, inspired by the beauty and versatility of honey itself. Spiced Honey can be soothing or calming, cosy or vibrant, depending on the palette you pair it with. My take on Spiced Honey is that whilst it is a beautiful, rich colour – it really comes into its own when supported by other colours. Dulux has cleverly curated 4 different palettes to do just that. #1 THINK – spaces for calm. Warm neutrals and honey tones that are positive but calm, soft but serious. Use these to create a space where people need to relax, focus and take the time to contemplate. Muted warm neutrals quietly nourish the mind. You can create interiors with a simple elegance using these colours. This is my favourite of the 4 palettes – especially with the inclusion of Angora blanket and Cobalt Night (I love using black in interiors). #2 DREAM – spaces for succeeding. A palette of powdery pastels and soft neutrals. Use these to create soothing spaces – which can encourage imagination, relaxation and wellness due to restful properties of pale blues and violet. Great for interiors where you need considered focus, and deeper thinking – a modern and clean palette. #3 LOVE – spaces for sharing. Great for spaces that subliminally bring people together. The deep reds in this palette are stimulating and the lovely, overall rich hues give a sense of warmth without feeling heavy or overbearing. The darker colours suggest warmth and permanence – but also some playfulness. Use in social spaces for richly coloured interiors. #4 ACT – spaces for action. These colours pop and are loaded with energy to encourage movement. This palette offers a dynamic that is young, playful and spontaneous. Great for an interior where you want to revitalise – to energise and encourage a positive, creative attitude. The colours are lovely and uncomplicated.
