Weird things can be encountered when on-site. Oh my goodness, there have been a few.
When I first started out, I worked for an interior design company in Oxfordshire. We did lots of work in Oxford University Colleges (the MOST amazing projects). A lot of the university properties were old - so we came across the normal issues you’d expect such as woodworm, damp, and general disrepair. On one site visit we did encounter a rather large, dead, rat. It was, if I remember correctly, right in the middle of a space that we had to measure up. So, we measured around him, ears pricked to attention, hoping his mates didn’t pitch up to see what we were doing. Even more scary than this though (it involved a body) was the time we had to go in to measure up for a student rental property. Even better than the thrill of a client referral is the absolute, complete and utter joy of repeat business. Yes! I mean, it is one thing for a client to refer you to someone else - it means they like you, right? But for them to employ and pay for your services again? It means they absolutely love what you do, trust you and want you to create more of the same.
That's how I felt this week when a long time client contacted me, from Shanghai no less, about a possible piece of design work. It’s such a confidence boost. But how do you get your interior design business to that stage?
