Coastal Haven
RESIDENTIAL PROJECT
This house was a little disjointed and out of proportion. The client purchased it with a view to extending and renovating before they moved in. The plan was to re-work the existing interior to create a better flow, re-site the staircase and build a 2-storey extension to the side - creating a larger kitchen with utility and cloakroom to the ground floor, and two additional bedrooms (one en-suite) and a family bathroom upstairs.
The house was a blank canvas with the whole property being refurbished. With busy lives in London - but family close by in Whitstable - the house was to be used as a coastal weekend retreat and a welcome escape from hectic work schedules. The design for the house was informed by the coastal location, with a brief to create a welcoming, calm and tranquil space. The clients favoured a neutral palette, which I combined with lots of natural design elements and textures to create character and a homely, lived in feel. I chose: warm toned bricks for the fireplace and kitchen splash-back; hand scraped oak engineered floors; raw materials such as concrete lights, leather seating, rattan chairs, linen curtains, wrought iron curtain poles and a live-edge oak dining table - to continue the natural, calm design whilst introducing enough texture and interest to prevent the neutral scheme feeling bland.
The result is a beautiful, timeless home which feels immediately relaxing and welcoming for the owners and guests alike.
