RESIDENTIAL PROJECT
This living room was long and thin with an adjoining conservatory. It had a ‘feature’ black wall-papered wall (!) but no real focal point. The clients were keen to turn the space into a formal living room but, with a young son, storage was also a priority. They wanted their son to use the space but for it to be as easy as possible for them to clear away the toys and clutter – so that they could keep this as a ‘smart front room’ when friends and family visited.
The first priority was to get rid of the black wallpaper and lighten up the room. The client had a pair of elephant side tables picked up on their travels which I used as a starting point for the new scheme. I picked fabrics inspired by traditional ethnic patterns in rich, bold colours - combining a unique mix of embroidered linens and coordinated stripes for a vibrant look that reflects the young family and creates a fresh space.
I tackled the long thin space by positioning the sofas to one end focused on bespoke cabinetry that holds the television. To the other end of the space we created an open area of flooring, with a sideboard, that would allow space to play.
In the conservatory we designed a bespoke bench seat with storage to fit the length of the room – and had bespoke cushions pads in coordinating fabrics made for a comfy place to sit and look out on the garden. This space can now be used by adults and children and makes clearing up quick and easy!
